Went for poly class gathering last Saturday. 8 of us turned up. we ate at sake sushi then walked around aimlessly before settling down in a coffee bean/Starbucks like place for a drink. Chatted awhile before we girls went home and the guys go for their activities. A simple outing that shows everyone is doing well and got used to the army lifestyle.
Super pissed before i forced myself to take a 2 hour nap. According to my poly friend who took the same elective and course as me but went to CBE in NTU, she got exempted from a total of 4 electives modules. She encourage me to inquire about it. I wrote an email to my course coordinator who forwarded my email to the in-charge. From Monday till Wednesday there was no news as to what is the status of my appeal. Called up the office on Wednesday at 4 plus. Pushed around like a ball before the correct person in charged replied me through email. It goes:
'I refer to your email sent to Prof Shuy show below. I regret to inform that we do not grant any course exemption for Elective with the reasons given in your email. NTU has included the AU needed for General Elective is to provide a platform to broaden student’s knowledge on top of the basic programme. Hence if you think you have already learned sufficient knowledge of that particular topics, you may select other courses in the respective category. We seek your understanding upon this matter, and I take this opportunity to wish you all the best in your study.'
I called up the academic office to the person who replied my mail. She said if there is anything you feel unfair about you can write an email with the explanation to appeal the second time. She said so far, CEE have never grant elective module exemption to anyone based on poly related elective. With that, my reply, 'from your tone, even if i were to write many appeals to the school it will still come up to nothing, CBE is a course from NTU, ENE is also a course from NTU. If CBE can be granted exemption from a few elective and ENE cannot, where is the fairness. On what base are you comparing? Why are they given so special privilege. If direct entry is a reason for it, for year 1 entry to ENE still no grant, it would be the same isn't it. For a crappy system that has been there for a long time, it is not possible to be changed overnight. ppl working there will have to meet up countless times and write many proposals in order for changes to be done. By then i get anything exempted, i think i would have already taken the elective paper! I just don't see why should there be a leniency of exemption for them not us. NTU, why is there a different system for different course? i find it absurd. Elective from a business school shouldn't it be considered by some overall coordinator from the business side, why is it like some tom, dick, harry from nowhere in charge of the elective from your school? and these tom, dick, harry don't even sit together to decide on one system and a fixed one where everyone follows? i will only say, a lousy system. Just a student, who will give a shit man.
